Technical-economic feasibility of the connection through an innovative hybrid rope-self-propelled system between the Port of Genoa and Forte Begato, located in the heights of the Ligurian city hinterland, with an intermediate station north of the Lagaccio district.
Three layout scenarios were analyzed, which differ from each other for the positioning of the valley station, located in all cases in the port area, and located:
- In Piazza Principe, above the underground Principe metro station, with consequent technical challenges caused by the transfer of the tension of the cables of approximately 150 tons and the additional load induced by the cableway station and the line supports;
- At the Hennebique building, once used as a granary silo, abandoned for over 50 years and which could be redeveloped as part of this project;
- In a part of the water mirror of the port of Genoa.
The first segment of the work crosses the Lagaccio district, and presents important engineering challenges in terms of overflights and urban integration, which have been solved by adopting line supports with a maximum height of more than 80m. In addition, the height of the cableway line is incompatible with the rescue from the ground, which is why a rescue line has been provided for the recovery of passengers in case of need.
The intermediate station is planned north of the Lagaccio district.
The second segment of the line, which connects the Lagaccio district to the Forte Begato, defines a more traditional route, with line supports of around 20m high, and assumes functions of tourist transport to the area of the fort and of a recirculation system at the service of paths and downhill routes.
