Technical and economic feasibility study
The designed connection connects the historic center of the city of Angri (Salerno), in the Agro Nocerino – Sarnese area, with the tourist port of the village of Maiori (Salerno), through a hybrid rope-self-propelled system, crossing the Lattari Mountains.
The defined route includes the terminus station at the existing Angri railway station (the railway line connects Naples, Pompeii and Salerno). Intermediate stations have been designed at the Angri motorway junction, as well as at the village of Corbara, the Valico di Chiunzi (pass on the Lattari mountains with an immense landscape and environmental value), the village of Tramonti-Polvica and the hinterland of Maiori. The terminus station on the sea side is foreseen on the port of Maiori, on the Amalfi coast.
The planned system is therefore not just a connection between Angri and Maiori, but allows to combine two of the most prestigious, famous and visited tourist clusters in the world: the Amalfi coast and the Vesuvian area (Pompeii, Naples …).
To minimize the impact of the work within the densely built-up urban center of Angri, the urban section was designed in the tunnel. The hybrid system, in fact, in its rail section in which the vehicle oscillations are minor, allows the definition of segments in the tunnel. The emergence is foreseen via an inclined ramp.
In the extra-urban section of ascent towards the Lattari mountains and descent, along the Regina Maiori valley, towards the sea, the system is instead designed in its variant on a cable, not unlike a traditional cable car.
The route has a length of about 14 km, much higher than the range of application of traditional cableway systems. The electrification of the vehicles, which allows the presence of infotainment systems, security cameras and air conditioning and ventilation systems, together with the panoramic view of the route, allows the designed system to be implemented even in multi-kilometer routes such as the one described.
